WEDDING CAKE HOW TO

I have two years to learn how to make a wedding cake for my own wedding (We're on a budget). I was thinking royal icing b/c I'm not a huge fan of the taste of fondant (unless someone knows a tasty fondant recipe). Also I don't want a run-of-the-mill (white, yellow, chocolate, marble) type of cake. We're both pretty eccentric, so something interesting would be great. If anyone can give me any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
